Christmas chutney (preparing for Christmas 3)

Following on from the success of the mincemeat making that I wrote about the other week, this weekend I returned to Nigella, this time to her Christmas book, and decided to make Christmas chutney. I'd spotted Christmas chutney in Marks and Spencers earlier in the week; we had it last year and it enlivened our usual cheese sandwiches a treat, but it was a little pricey and I didn't have room in my shopping bag that day. So when I saw Nigella's recipe and realised that I had ALL of the ingredients already in my cupboard, I thought I should give it a go.

And here it is!

It's similar to this recipe, I can't find the one I used online, but mine involved some dates, orange juice and zest, and frozen rather than dried cranberries. Although masked by a strong smell of vinegar, it did have a lovely Christmassy smell whilst boiling. I only made a half quantity but still got 6 jars out of it. Unfortunately the chutney has to mature for 2 months (made it just in the nick of time) so I hope it tastes ok. Or it will be back to Marks and Spencers.

  1. Ooh this sounds delicious. I picked up the Sainsbury magazine yesterday and they have a Jamie Oliver recipe for chutney which looks lovely too. I may just have to make a batch.

  2. It sounds delicious! I've never tried making chutney and, since it needs two months to mature, it looks like it won't happen this year either.

  3. I've never tried to can anything, but this certainly sounds good. You are certainly giving me plenty of ideas for things to do with my kids on holiday break. :)

  4. This certainly sounds good? I think that should have been "really" sounds good. Off to find my second cup of coffee and wake up a little more before I do any more typing. ;)

  5. Ohh yummy and what a storage coincidence as I was just looking through that book this morning. I've never dare make chutney but I will vouch for marks, their red onion one is delish!

  6. I'm chutney making next week... apple, from the last of the apples off our trees. Today though it was shallot peeling for pickled onions. I've never heard of Christmas chutney but I bet it's really nice.

  8. Chutney, yum, yum. Although I'm not a huge Nigella fan (her show is so annoying) she does take some points off Nigel Slater for actually including ingredients you might just happen to have around the house.
