It's beautiful in the extreme but I don't think I was old enough to appreciate it at the time. I want to take my husband one of these days as I know he'd love Tresco gardens. I hope you enjoy the Molteno and really hope you'll let me know what you think. I also enjoyed The summer book, but I can't think of many other adult novels on islands, though Enid Blyton and Arthur Ransome aplenty!verityhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16825551404394913715noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2203825390310863045.post-39762418526922686912010-03-10T10:54:38.491+00:002010-03-10T10:54:38.491+00:00I so liked the quote about islands having edges th...I so liked the quote about islands having edges that I've sent for Marion Molteno's book, thanks for that. I live in a cabin on an otherwise uninhabited island myself - my wife is an artist and I write - so I'm a sucker for anything on islands. My fovourite is Tove Jansson's The Summer Book, but I recently came across an American writer called Rachel Field, who lived in a beachfront house on Sutton Island, off Maine. She wrote poetry and children's books, and died young in the early 1940s. I thought you might enjoy this poem from 1935 called If Once You Have Slept On An Island:

If once you have slept on an island
You'll never be quite the same;
You may look as you looked the day before
And go by the same old name

You may bustle about in street and shop;
You may sit at home and sew,
But you'll see blue water and wheeling gulls
Wherever your feet may go.

You may chat with the neighbour of this and that
And close to your fire keep
But you'll hear ship's whistle and lighthouse bell
And tides beat through your sleep

Oh, you won't know why and you can't say how
Such change upon you came,
But - once you have slept on an island
You'll never be quite the same!

Rachel Field (c.1935)

I'm sure you'll enjoy Nigel Farrel's book about the Scilly Isles - I enjoyed it enough to review in on Amazon, where I make a point of only doing 4 or 5 star reviews in case I've got it wrong!
MichaelMichael Faulknerhttp://www.thebluecabin.blogspot.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2203825390310863045.post-17143603863603603252010-03-07T09:36:43.148+00:002010-03-07T09:36:43.148+00:00Jane - that's good news - you'll definitel...Jane - that's good news - you'll definitely have to borrow it - I thought it was a lovely book.

Merenia - so glad yo uare enjoying Camomile - I thought it wonderful. Stay on St Mary's and then travel to the other islands; my favourite is St Martins', but they are all lovely. For me when I visit it's like the most perfect place.
